Job Title: Yoga Group Exercise Instructor
Status: part time, non exempt, Y job grade 4
Wage: $21.00/hour or doe
Reports to:Director of Health & Wellness
Probation: Subject to a 12-month introductory (probationary) period
POSITION SUMMARY: The Yoga Group Exercise Instructor teaches fitness classes or programs in their specific area of expertise. Primary responsibility is to plan, organize and safely lead participants through class and program activities appropriate to the fitness level of the participants in the class, insuring a positive experience. Must be able to thrive in an environment with the unique challenges of a non-profit community service organization. Works with very limited supervision.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Conduct and organizes engaging classes by: beginning and ending on time, welcoming new participants (introduce to class), knowing participants names, and adhering to class format
Teach to various fitness levels simultaneously and be able to provide modifications for all abilities
Monitor participants for proper positioning and intensity levels and be able to explain or demonstrate the correct and safe way to perform all exercises by applying appropriate policies and procedures.
Know and adhere to general fitness principles and avoid contraindicated exercises
Actively solicit feedback and makes suggestions to help members meet fitness/wellness goals
Follow up with members and ensure that needs are met
Refer members to physician or physical therapist when appropriate
Arrive 5 to 10 minutes early to greet members, welcome, and assist them
Plan and teach all classes agreed to on the current monthly Group Exercise Schedule
Keep abreast of changes and trends in the fitness industry by continuing education (reading, workshops, attending other instructor's classes, etc.)
Be a role model for members and fellow instructors
Handle all audio equipment with care
Report any equipment or studio malfunctions to the Group Exercise Coordinator or Health and Wellness Director immediately
Record hours on time sheet and turn in on scheduled date
Turn in schedule requests on the 10th of the month, for the following month
Maintain a professional appearance
All items as listed on the “Staff Expectations” guidelines
Complete required child abuse prevention training, follow all abuse prevention and risk management policies, maintain appropriate boundaries, supervise responsibly, and fulfill all legal and ethical duties as a mandatory reporter by promptly reporting and cooperating with any investigations of suspected abuse or policy violations.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS:
Educational background and/or experience in group exercise instruction.
Certification in field to be taught
Preferred: at least 6 months-1 year related teaching experience
Current CPR Certificate, can be obtained at the Y

Must be able to engage strangers in conversation and make all people feel welcome; maintain confidentiality, high degree of tact required
Coordination, rhythm and timing skills
Working knowledge of anatomy, kinesiology and safe exercise technique
Establish rapport with members
Work effectively in a group as a team member
Interpret and enforce all safety and health regulations
Ability to respond calmly and swiftly in emergency situations
Is consistently at work and on time, occasionally work varied shifts
Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work enthusiastically within constantly changing priorities
Ability to exercise sound judgment and handle conflicts in a timely and professional manner
Must be able to occasionally work varied shifts dependant on events and staffing needs
Must be able to work autonomously and with limited supervision within the Y core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility
Must be able to meet minimum requirements and perform functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation
Ability to attend all trainings and meetings as required even if scheduled outside normal working or regularly scheduled hours.
Frequently may require bending, leaning, kneeling, lifting and walking
